Management of the Gimli Harbour

The Gimli Harbour Authority is a separate legal entity incorporated in April of 2005. The Gimli Harbour Authority has been established under the guidelines of Small Craft Harbours – a department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The GHA consists of an elected Board of Directors, an Administration office and the Gimli Harbour Master. The Board of Directors is comprised of seven members, four of which are commercial fisherman. Two members are from the RM of Gimli, and the final member is appointed by the Gimli Yacht Club

The role of the Board of Directors of the GHA is to establish policy, rules and regulations for the Gimli Harbour, set annual berthing rates, and long term budget planning for future maintenance and development. The Administration office and the Gimli Harbour Master carry out the day to day operations of the Gimli Harbour and report directly to the Board of Directors.

The Gimli Harbour is in fact a federal harbour under lease from Small Craft Harbours. It is classified as a Class A Harbour, and is considered a success story with Small Craft Harbours. The primary mission of the Gimli Harbour Authority is the preservation and promotion of the commercial fishing industry in this area through the management of the Gimli Harbour. At present, the Gimli Harbour Authority is a self-sustaining entity that produces a healthy profit each year. These revenues have been used to continue the ongoing development of services in the Gimli Harbour.

Since 2005, completed projects include the building of the BC Packer’s Wharf, the supply and installation of 3-phase power to the main areas of the harbour, updated electrical wiring in both the inner harbour and the Yacht Club areas, revised plumbing, and dredging. This year work continues on the old Pan Am Pier with the removal of old timber piles, the installation of new steel piles, the construction of new docks, and routine dredging. Planned projects include the re-surfacing of all three existing wharf’s – including the Main Dock. Also planned is the construction of new docks on the south side of the old Pan Am Pier.

The Gimli Harbour Authority continues to work in cooperation with many partners including the RM of Gimli on a variety of issues, and coordinates their efforts through Small Craft Harbours. The GHA is committed to the management, maintenance and development of this unique federal harbour.
