FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND PLANS

 Proposed Future Development

The Gimli Harbour Authority has been presented with some ongoing challenges in regard to development. One of the primary concerns of the GHA is how to increase the amount of revenue that can be generated within the harbour now that it is almost at maximum capacity. The GHA is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and development of the Gimli Harbour, and as a result, has had to ensure that it has a long term financial plan.

Another primary concern within the Harbour Authority is improving the quality of life of our recreational boaters and improving the experience of our large numbers of visitors during peak tourist seasons. Our harbour users have identified many possible areas for improvement over the years, and all interest and feedback from our local community has always been welcomed.

Included below are some upcoming projects:

  1. The removal of the groyne north of the South Dock has been approved by the Environmental Department of Fish Habitat. The removal of this groyne is intended to increase the amount of slips that can be used along the South Dock and improve boater safety within the harbour.

  1. The re-enforcement of the South Dock and other finger docks is currently in the planning stages. Due to the severity of the windstorms experienced within the Gimli Harbour, the harbour is looking atoptions to minimize the amount of movement that takes place with the finger docks – especially on the South Dock. The Gimli Harbour has experienced occasions in both 2007 and 2008 where the finger docks have been ripped from the principal docks. Fortunately, the vessels attached to these docks did not sustain any damage. This plan is a priority for the GHA, and one that will take precedence with the GHA due to the safety of the vessels concerned.

Listed below are future projects that have been discussed, but not approved as of yet:

  1. Resurfacing of the Main Dock. At present, the cement is crumbling and needs to be resurfaced along the entire section of main dock. This will also require the wooden steps and walkway to be improved.

  1. Possible addition of a second conveyor for the loading and unloading of fish.

  1. Future expansion on South side of Pan Am pier to accommodate larger vessels within the Harbour. The expansion of the Pan Am pier has included the possible addition of electrical service, and finger docks.

  2. Replacement of poles along the Pan Am pier.

  1. A plan to build a 20x20ft Observation Deck on the northwest corner of the Harbour has been discussed. Proposed heights of this observation deck have been between 30-40ft high with double stairs along both sides of the structure.

  1. A fountain within the northwest portion of the harbour was also discussed as something that could go hand in hand with an observation deck or as a stand-alone project. A fountain was cited as a way to improve the aeration and movement of the water in that portion of the harbour. At present, there is not a great deal of movement of the water in this portion of the harbour and as a result, algae and litter can accumulate.
